Research & validation

Evidence you can follow.

A mechanism explains what might happen. A measurement shows what happened in a test. A clinical study asks a different question: what happened in people?

Three questions. Three kinds of evidence.

How does it work?Physical and chemical studies explain mechanisms such as separation, adsorption and mixing.
What does this system do?Product testing measures performance of an identified configuration under stated conditions.
What changes in people?Human trials assess specified outcomes, populations and interventions.

These levels complement one another. A paper about mixing does not certify a filter, and a reduction in a chemical marker does not establish a disease treatment. Each claim should be attached to the evidence that actually answers it.

A certification has a scope.

Water-treatment standards address different claims. NSF/ANSI 42 concerns aesthetic effects such as taste and odor; 53 covers specified health-related contaminant reductions; 58 addresses reverse-osmosis systems. The listing for the exact model identifies the certified claims.

A logo or a reference to a standard is not enough. Ask for the model, certification body and specific reduction claims. No Onyx certification is represented here as obtained without a verifiable listing.

Follow the water all the way to the outlet.

A practical validation plan compares inlet and outlet samples, records pressure and flow, includes fresh and aged cartridges, and checks the final assembled system. Independent laboratory analysis can then connect the proposed mechanism with measured performance.

Microplastic analysis needs size ranges and blank controls. Mineral analysis needs individual concentrations. Microbiological evaluation needs appropriate challenge organisms and protocols. pH, conductivity and ORP provide useful information, but cannot replace all these tests.
